2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Era of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Amphibians have been far from new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their prevalence has noticeably surged in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this phenomenon, I conducted a deep dive into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a steady increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's growing prominence in the broader culture is also apparent elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the trend in gaming looks particularly strong.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs offer inherent creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

Many of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.

If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be on the verge of a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
