Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track directly in front of him

The concerning event occurred on the third lap when track officials were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to swap his damaged front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"

"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes running across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Clearly there's been a failure in communication at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track marshals can be authorized to just sprint across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"

Governing Body Reviewing

The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the situation

"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the FIA

"During the third lap, marshals were notified and made ready to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send officials were withdrawn and a caution signal was displayed in that area"

"We are still investigating what occurred subsequent to that time"
