The England manager Criticizes Wembley Fan Atmosphere Despite Dominant Wales Victory.
The England head coach shared his sadness that the Three Lions team did not receive more support from the Wembley fans during their commanding triumph over Wales on Thursday evening.
Tuchel was happy to see his side continue their winning momentum, with finishes from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes settling the game. Yet, he was unhappy with the mood at the iconic venue.
“With one and a half training days to get ready against a drilled team and we did very well,” the coach remarked. “We could have been 5-0 up at the break. We missed the fourth and fifth goals. There was little noise. We didn’t get support from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“What more can you deliver in 20 minutes? We didn’t let them get away. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s disappointing because the team deserved more support today.”
“I stand by this statement. There’s nothing more than being 3-0 in a derby. I would have wished for a greater support in periods where it gets difficult.”
“After halftime, to support us, there was excessive support for Wales. It could have helped us to recharge, but that’s the way it went and that is it.”
Selection Choices Justified by Performance
Apart from potentially starting a fight with fans, Tuchel also raised eyebrows by omitting Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his team selection. But the move was justified by Rogers excelling in the attacking midfield role and scoring his maiden goal for his country.
“That’s his style,” the head coach explained. “He is a No 10 and he is competing for his position.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Lessons from Loss
Craig Bellamy expressed hope that Wales, who face a strong Belgian side in a crucial World Cup qualifier on Monday, take lessons from their disappointing performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I wanted this game,” Bellamy stated. “I need to see our current level. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? Today fills me with inspiration.”
Fitness Worry for Striker
Ollie Watkins was withdrawn at the break after colliding with a post and may miss out when the national team play Latvia in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
