This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
