How Fake Pictures of Maduro Surfaced Within Hours
The first inauthentic synthetic picture apparently displaying him led off a aircraft circulated a brief time later. This image was absent from any official government accounts; it was instead uploaded on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
We’ve checked the SynthID tool, confirming the image was generated or edited with generative AI.
Additional synthetic visuals started circulating in the ensuing hours, appearing to show more angles of the leader under guard. Visible logos on these images indicate they came from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.
SynthID indicates all of these images were likewise created or altered Google AI.
Authentic Image Released but Fabrications Persisted
Donald Trump released the first real photo of Nicolás Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. Yet following the authentic image was released, synthetic images persisted online but were modified to show the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.
